Suzanne Colson, RM, PhD

Suzanne Colson is an independent midwifery lecturer and an honorary senior lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University. She has 35 years experience supporting breastfeeding mothers in both hospital and community settings. She is a Royal College of Nursing Akinsanya Scholar 2007, an honorary member and founding mother/leader of La Leche League France, and a member of the LLL professional advisory panel in the UK and France. Dr. Colson is the author
of the DVD, Biological Nurturing ~ Laid-Back Breastfeeding for health professionals. A new DVD for parents will be available through Geddes Productions in September 2010. She has also written research papers, articles, and information sheets, some of which are available on the biological nurturing web site www.biologicalnurturing.com.

Dr. Colson worked in France as a lactation consultant with Michel Odent, and as a caseload midwife to French-speaking asylum seekers in London and a midwife/baby feeding advisor in London hospitals. Passionate about research, she worked on the Williams, Hawdon, and DeRooy team, examining the effects of supplementation on metabolic adaptation and breastfeeding and studied a subset of mother/baby pairs for her MSc. She was awarded a doctorate in 2006 for her work examining the mechanisms of biological nurturing; the thesis won first prize in the inaugural Akinsanya contest, a prestigious award given by the Royal College of Nursing Research Society for originality and scholarship in doctoral studies.
