Dr. Hale recently created the InfantRisk Center, a call center and website, to provide current, evidence-based information on the use of medications during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Nearly all of the 4.3 million women giving birth in the US each year will use at least one medication while pregnant/breastfeeding. These women and their healthcare providers need a source of accurate information regarding the risks of drug exposure to mothers and their babies. By educating healthcare professionals and the general public, the InfantRisk Center staff hopes to reduce the number of birth defects and create healthy breastfeeding relationships.
There are two components to the InfantRisk Center – a website and a call center. The website includes a wealth of information on medications and pregnancy, breastfeeding, depression, alcohol, nausea, and hot topics. Dr. Hale has moved his webforum to this site. Everyone can review answers on his old and new webforums. Health providers (doctors, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, lactation consultants, La Leche League leaders, and other professionals) can ask questions on the new webforum. A new section, Forums for Mothers with Special Conditions, allows mothers with various syndromes and conditions to meet and discuss breastfeeding or pregnancy issues associated with those conditions. Comments and questions can be added as long as they are pertinent to breastfeeding and lactation. The web address is http://infantrisk.org/.
The other component is the call center. The call center is open to answer questions Monday-Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm CST. The number is (806)352-2519. Although you can post a question on the webforum, the staff would prefer you call the InfantRisk Center, so they can carefully evaluate your individual situation and give you personal attention.
The well-rounded staff of the call center include:
- Dr. Thomas Hale, RPh, PhD (pharmacologist), Executive Director
- Dr. Teresa Baker, MD (obstetrician/gynecologist), Associate Director
- Dr. Maria Milla, MD, MPH (pediatrician)
- Cynthia Pride, MSN, CPNP (nurse practioner)
- Colleen Peace, RN, BSN (registered nurse)
Professional consultants include:
- Dr. Curtis Turner, MD (pediatric hematologist/oncologist)
- Dr. Richard Lampe, MD (pediatric infectious diseases specialist)
