Kathleen McCue, RN, MS, FNP, IBCLC

Kathleen F. McCue, RN, MS, FNP, IBCLC, is both a nurse practitioner and a board-certified lactation consultant. She is the mother of two grown children and currently lives in Bethesda, MD. She has been working in the medical field since 1976 when she first graduated nursing school. Presently, she works part-time as a nurse practitioner for a pediatric practice, Children First Pediatrics, and part-time operating a full-service lactation consulting business, Bethesda Breastfeeding, LLC, in the Washington, D.C. area.
Kathleen’s first exposure to breastfeeding and its benefits came nearly 20 years ago when she was working as a nurse in a local pediatric practice. She saw that breastfeeding offered a wide range of health advantages, but it had little public recognition and acceptance. Working with breastfeeding mothers and babies offered Kathleen a great deal of personal satisfaction. In 2000, Kathleen returned to school for her Nurse Practitioner degree, and chose Family Practice as her specialty. NP training brought new information and insight that Kathleen immediately put to good use with new mothers. At the same time, her expanded experience and confidence helped bring greater reassurance and calm to women seeking to breastfeed for the first time.
Although breastfeeding outcomes and infant health issues are serious, Kathleen has found that new mothers benefit from understanding they are not alone and from hearing about innumerable other women who have faced the same issues. She uses the humor of shared human experience to help new moms cope. There will always be another situation or predicament that is more unusual, more unique, or otherwise just able to make a mom under stress lighten up and laugh. With humor, Kathleen helps put new moms at ease, while constantly reassuring them that breastfeeding can and will work, and that relaxing can actually facilitate the process.
Kathleen wanted to write this book to give new parents an easy-to-read reference― and she just could not say “yes” to everyone who asked if she “could please come home with us.” She hopes readers will be more informed and reassured after reading this book, and that it will make the breastfeeding process easier and less stressful. Nothing should be more natural. Her website can be found at www.bethesdabreastfeeding.com/.
