July 13, 2010 – The SunCoast News reports that Dr. Sandra E. Sullivan, a clinical assistant professor of pediatrics in the neonatology division of the University of Florida, has written an article for the online Pediatrics trying to educate her colleagues about tongue tie. She explains in the article that tongue tie can be alleviated by a procedure that is easier and quicker than a circumcision. According to Dr. Sullivan, it takes less time to do the procedure than to fill out the consent form. She says traditional medical training encourages doctors to think this procedure is not necessary. However, most infants with this condition have problems breastfeeding and cause their mothers’ pain. With between 40,000 and 100,000 babies born each year with this condition, general pediatric training needs to prepare doctors to pay attention to the importance of tongue tie to breastfeeding. Dr.
