Her new pocket guide puts much of that reference information into a convenient size that fits in a lab coat pocket or home visit bag. It summarizes a wide range of topics including characteristics of normal breastfeeding, nipple and breast pain, health challenges that affect breastfeeding (such as jaundice, hypoglycemia, prematurity, maternal illness), weight gain and milk production, concerns about life as a breastfeeding family (sleep, nutrition, exercise, employment, contraception), emergencies, induced lactation, and weaning. It lists strategies to consider in each situation. Line drawings illustrate latch and positioning ideas. Tables summarize numbers (such as average feeding volume by age or milk storage guidelines) and lists (such as safe sleep practices or preterm babies’ cues) for quick reference. Appendices explain breast compression, hand expression, nipple shield use, reverse pressure softening, and latch techniques. Many sections list resources for further information. The 26-page index makes finding specific topics easy. The font is small but easy to read, with some space for adding notes. In balancing comprehensiveness with size, the pocket guide glossed over some topics. Two in particular that would be helpful are using an at-breast supplementer and choosing a breast pump. Rather than skimping on topics, the condensed book length was mainly achieved by cutting the citations for information. Unless the reader also has access to the BAMS textbook, it is difficult to judge the evidence for the many different recommendations. It would also be difficult to provide evidence-based justification for a recommendation to parents or other health care providers. This pocket guide’s strength is the wide range of lists and reminders that a practitioner can use in easily portable form. It could be a useful book for anyone who helps breastfeeding families and would be most useful as a portable supplement for someone who already owns BAMS.
