What is it like to have a natural birth and what are the benefits? Author Natasha Panzer has pulled together birth stories from a variety of moms who decided to give birth naturally. The book covers:
-Birthing in a birth center
-Preparing for natural birth
-Natural birth in the hospital
-Natural vaginal birth after cesarean
-Home births
-Unexpected home delivery

The birth stories are sweet and inspiring. As you read this book, you will feel like you are right there with the mom delivering that baby, feeling the triumph the mom feels after delivering her baby naturally, and experiencing the parents' joy as they welcome their newborn to this world! The stories show that natural birth is possible in a myriad of settings, even in hospitals.

"If you are looking for confidence-building birth stories and some good tips for getting through labor, you&#39ll enjoy reading Spontaneous Joyful Natural Birth!"

Spontaneous Joyful Natural Birth is a very interesting book exploring the different options of natural childbirth. The brilliance of this book is that after describing each birth option the author includes a number of birth stories that she has collected from mothers who have had their birth in the chosen venue. There is even a birth story from a father. These stories and the accompanying pictures give the book a personal feel and substantiate the author’s information. Each birth story includes private aspects of the mothers’ experience as well as an insight into how things work in real lives. This book would be a lovely addition to a private book collection of birth professionals such as midwives and doulas. More importantly, every pregnant woman should own a copy.

The different venues covered include the natural birth center, the hospital, and a home birth. Something very unique is the unexpected home birth with stories from mothers sharing their surprising births. Preparing for Your Natural Childbirth looks specifically at what happens during labor, relaxing during labor, managing the intensity of labor, and “natural” ways to stimulate labor. These chapters are filled with a lot of interesting and useful information for every mother considering a natural birth. As insightful as these chapters are, some basic information about alternative options such as homeopathy, acupuncture/acupressure and reflexolgy in the chapter on “natural” ways to stimulate labor may have expanded the readership of this already very good book.

The book is well written. It is not too basic for a professional in the industry while concepts and jargon are explained well enough for any pregnant mother to understand. Lactation consultants will appreciate that most of the stories include the first feed. Most of the babies latched immediately after birth, even after cesareans. The mothers’ elation when her baby first latched and motivation to birth naturally and to breastfeed their babies make it enjoyable to read. The endorsement by Ina May Gaskin supports the quality and inspirational value of Spontaneous Joyful Natural Birth.
